AVID is a nationally recognized program in over 5,000 schools in 44 states throughout the country. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elective class that meets A-G UC Requirements and prepares students who have academic potential, but who need guidance to navigate the often-confusing college application process. Our Don Lugo AVID program grows every year and currently represents 10% of the school and is made up of students who are:

low-income

first-generation to go to college

traditionally under-represented

goal-setting mind-set

academically driven

Our AVID student participate in bi-weekly tutoring with college students and prepares students to be college and career ready with an emphasis on WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies. Our students also go on field trips to colleges and hear from college alumni and college representatives. Our teachers are highly-trained, highly-qualified, and very motivated in helping our students reach their goals of being college students.
